Adelaide Weather

The weather in Adelaide

Most locals will tell you the best weather in Adelaide happens in the Autumn (March through May) and Spring (September through November) when the average temperature hovers around 22-24°C, and there is limited rainfall.  Low tourist numbers and pristine days at this time of year are perfect for all types of sightseeing and outdoor activities in the ‘City Of Churches’.

Adelaide winters can be erratic and somewhat wet, so best pack a waterproof coat, umbrella, warm jumper (Australian for sweater) and a scarf. Though don’t worry; the sun is never away for too long in South Australia. Winter is from June to August with the days averaging about 15°C. You won’t see snow in Adelaide, though on odd occasions it falls in the hinterland around Adelaide, such as the Adelaide Hills and Mount Lofty.

And if you like the heat of summer, then you’ll love Adelaide. In March 2008, Adelaide recorded 15 consecutive days with maximum temperatures of 35°C or above in what was the longest heat wave recorded in an Australian capital city. However when sanity prevails, the weather gods usually maintain an average daily summer temperature range of 26-28°C. Should the temperature rise above this, be sure to listen out for the word ‘scorcher!’ as this means it really is hot. So do as the locals do - slip on a long sleeved shirt, slop on some sunscreen cream and slap on a good broad rim hat for protection against the hot Adelaide sun.
